Bossa Nova Morning — Gentle Vamp in D Major

Bossa Nova4/40 vistas

Not every bossa nova piece needs to be harmonically complex. Some of Tom Jobim's most beloved works — "Garota de Ipanema" (The Girl from Ipanema), "Corcovado" — use relatively simple chord movements but achieve their beauty through rhythmic nuance and the interplay of the guitar's bass, chord, and melody voices. The intermediate player should master this simpler bossa framework before attempting the extended harmonies of advanced pieces. This D major vamp uses only diatonic 7th chords: Dmaj7, Em7, A7, and Bm7 — the I, ii, V, and vi chords of D major. The beauty comes entirely from the bossa nova rhythmic feel and the resonance of the guitar in the key of D. Open strings on the D and A strings provide natural sustain that enriches the chord voicings without any extra effort. The bossa rhythm: the thumb plays bass on beat 1, then the fingers comp a syncopated chord pattern on beats 2, "and of 2," "and of 3," and 4. This five-element rhythm (bass + four chord hits) is the heart of bossa nova guitar. Master this rhythm before adding any chord complexity.
