Fingerstyle Pattern Etude in A Minor

Fingerstyle4/40 vistas

The rolling fingerpicking pattern (p-i-m-a-m-i, repeating) is the foundation of classical and folk fingerstyle guitar. Each right-hand finger is assigned a string: thumb (p) on strings 4–6, index (i) on string 3, middle (m) on string 2, ring (a) on string 1. The pattern creates a continuous flowing texture over chord changes, transforming simple four-chord progressions into rich, full arrangements. In A minor, this pattern creates a sorrowful, intimate sound reminiscent of Spanish café guitar and classical guitar études. The chords change every bar while the right hand pattern continues uninterrupted — demanding that the left hand execute chord changes precisely on beat 1 without any disruption to the flowing right-hand line. This is the essential intermediate fingerstyle exercise: mastering it at 100 bpm cleanly prepares you for everything in the fingerstyle repertoire. Practice slowly with a metronome and do not increase tempo until every string in every arpeggio position rings cleanly without buzzing.
