Siguiriyas in E Phrygian
Siguiriyas (also written siguirillas) is considered the deepest and most tragic of all flamenco forms — the cante jondo of cante jondo. Its 12-beat compás is asymmetric: grouped as 3+3+2+2+2 but starting on a different beat than bulerías. The mood is heavy, slow, and laden with deep sorrow (duende). At its core is the Phrygian cadence F–E, representing the perpetual movement toward resolution that never fully arrives. Unlike bulerías, siguiriyas is played at a stately, deliberate pace. Every note must have weight and intention. Guitarists use tremolo, alzapúa (thumb technique), and picado (single-note runs) to support the singer or express the form solo. The chord voicings are often bare and open — letting the resonance of the strings breathe. Study the falseta in E Phrygian: descend F–E–D–C–B–A then resolve to E major. This melodic gesture is the DNA of siguiriyas. Repeat it until it feels inevitable.
