Celtic Folk Fingerpicking in A Dorian

Folk6/80 vistas

The Dorian mode (natural minor with a raised 6th degree) is the harmonic signature of Celtic and Irish traditional music. In A Dorian: A–B–C–D–E–F#–G–A. The raised 6th (F# instead of F) gives Celtic music its distinctive brightness within the minor context — a sound simultaneously melancholic and energetic. Most Irish jigs and reels that feel "Celtic" are in Dorian mode. This fingerpicking arrangement in A Dorian uses open-string drones combined with fretted melody notes to create the classic Irish guitar sound developed by Dáithí Sproule, Steve Cooney, and Paul Brady. The low A string functions as a constant pedal drone while the melody weaves between the upper strings. The fingerpicking pattern uses the thumb exclusively on the low E and A strings while all four melody fingers are deployed on strings 1–4. Advanced technique requires smooth position shifts without interrupting the open-string drone. The Dorian F# (6th degree) is the most important note — it separates Dorian from natural minor and must be voiced clearly in every pass through the scale.
