Advanced Montuno — Salsa Piano Voicings Adapted for Guitar in Dm

Latin4/41 views

The montuno is the interlocking rhythmic piano figure that drives salsa, mambo, and Cuban son music. Originally a piano technique (think Irakere, Willie Colón, Celia Cruz recordings), the montuno has been adapted for guitar by players who want to maintain the full rhythmic and harmonic drive of the style without a keyboard player. The montuno pattern is a two-bar figure that combines bass notes (on the low strings) with upper-register chord stabs (on the high strings) in a continuous, interlocking rhythm that fits inside the clave. The guitar version requires the thumb to play bass notes while the fingers execute the rhythmic chord pattern on strings 1–3. Advanced salsa guitar requires understanding which chord tones to voice in each position of the clave cycle, maintaining the montuno pattern through chord changes (Dm→Gm→A7→Dm) while the rhythm never stops. This creates the non-stop rhythmic energy characteristic of salsa bands even during guitar feature sections.
