Djent Polyrhythm — 4 Against 3 in Drop C

Metal4/40 views

Djent (named for the staccato, percussive palm-muted tone pioneered by Meshuggah and later Periphery, Animals as Leaders, and Tesseract) is characterized by syncopated riffing in polymetric patterns, typically on extended-range guitars in drop tunings. This progression uses a standard 6-string guitar in Drop C (C-G-C-F-A-D) to approximate the style on accessible equipment. The rhythmic pattern is 4-against-3: the guitar riff has an internal grouping of 3 beats while the drums enforce a 4/4 meter. After 12 beats (three bars of 4/4 or four groups of 3) the two patterns re-align. This polyrhythmic displacement creates the characteristic "floating" sensation where the riff feels both off and completely right. Tune down to Drop C (low string to C) before playing. All power chords are a single finger across the two lowest strings. Palm mute heavily on the low C pedal notes between chord attacks — 80% of the notes should be muted ghost hits.
